Numana

Numana sits on a cliff a few kilometres south of Sirolo, divided into the upper town (Numana Alta) and a lower harbour district (Numana Bassa). The upper town is the prettier half: a small grid of streets, the Arco di Torre — a medieval arch that is all that remains of an older fortified gate — and an excellent regional Antiquarium with finds from the Picene tombs of the surrounding area.

The lower town is built around a small fishing port that is also where the boats for the cliff beaches leave from. Numana works well as an alternative base to Sirolo, slightly cheaper and slightly more workaday.

A story
Numana was a major Picene port in the centuries before Rome — the Antiquarium in the upper town has the gold, amber and pottery the necropolis gave up. The lower town and harbour stayed busy through Roman and medieval times; the upper town is where you go for the view.
