Ancona — the regional capital, with its Roman Arch of Trajan, the hilltop cathedral of San Ciriaco, and a working ferry port — is twenty minutes north and good for a half day.
The hill towns of the Marche interior are all within an hour. Recanati, about 25 kilometres inland, is the birthplace of the poet Giacomo Leopardi and holds three Lorenzo Lotto altarpieces in its Museo Civico. Loreto, fifteen kilometres south, is built around the Holy House and ranks among the most visited Marian shrines in Europe. Castelfidardo is the world capital of accordion making, with a museum of historic instruments and a Risorgimento battlefield; nearby Osimo is known for its Roman cisterns. Senigallia, half an hour up the coast, has the most elegant seafront in the region.
