Capo Ferro Lighthouse

The Capo Ferro Lighthouse marks the southern entrance to the Strait of Bonifacio and the Maddalena archipelago, and the headland it sits on is the easiest viewpoint in the area for a long look across to Corsica. Built in 1858 and still active, the lighthouse stands on a granite promontory above some of the most photogenic stretches of the Costa Smeralda coastline.

The lighthouse itself is closed to visitors, but a paved road runs up to it from the SP59 and the cape is a reliable spot for sunset. The path continues around the headland to the Cala Granu beach below. On clear days you can see the Lavezzi islands and the southern Corsican coast across the strait.

A story
Just offshore from Capo Ferro lie the Monaci rocks, where in 1962 the cargo ship Esso Malta wrecked and spilled fuel along this coast — one of the incidents that pushed the local authorities to designate the surrounding waters as a marine protected area decades later.
