Via Etnea

Via Etnea is the main thoroughfare of central Catania, a long straight street running north from Piazza del Duomo for about three kilometres up to the Giardino Bellini. It was laid out in the rebuilding after 1693, deliberately aligned on Mount Etna so that the volcano fills the view at the southern end and looms ahead as you walk north.

Along its length: high-street shops, the university square, Piazza Stesicoro with the Roman amphitheatre half-sunk in front of it, and the Giardino Bellini at the far end. The whole street pedestrianises in the evenings for the passeggiata, and it is the obvious place to drift on a warm Sunday.
