The Giardino Pacini is a small public park behind the cathedral, named for the composer Giovanni Pacini, a contemporary and friendly rival of Bellini's. It is sometimes called the Villa Pacini and locally known as 'Villa dei Varagghi' — the park of the idlers — because of the older men who play cards and drafts here in the afternoons.
It is not a sight in any conventional sense, but it is a useful pause between the cathedral and the fish market, and the lava-stone benches and palm trees are quietly atmospheric.
