Lipari Cathedral

The Co-Cathedral of San Bartolomeo, on the acropolis, was rebuilt after Barbarossa's 1544 raid that destroyed the medieval church and carried off most of the island's population. The current basilica is largely 17th-century, with a Baroque facade and an interior decorated in painted plaster and gilded wood. The cloister of the adjacent Benedictine monastery — surviving from the 12th century — is the oldest Norman-period structure on Lipari.

The cathedral is open during daylight hours; the silver statue of Saint Bartholomew, paraded round town in the August feast, is on display year-round. Modest dress required.
