Monte Sant'Angelo

At 594 metres, Monte Sant'Angelo is the highest point on Lipari and the best viewpoint in the whole archipelago. The walk up — about two and a half hours from Pianoconte by the marked path — passes through old terraced farmland and chestnut groves before topping out on bare rock with a 360° panorama: Vulcano smoking to the south, Salina and Filicudi to the west, Panarea and Stromboli to the north-east, and Sicily on a clear day.

Take water, a hat, and proper shoes — the upper section is loose stone. The walk is straightforward in spring and autumn but uncomfortably hot in midsummer. Start early.
