Sicily rewards the active traveller. Hike the summit craters of Mount Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano, or trek to the top of Stromboli at night to watch red-hot lava light up the darkness. The Alcantara Gorges offer a dramatic canyon walk through basalt formations.
Beyond the volcanoes, Sicily is packed with ancient sites. The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and the Roman mosaics at Piazza Armerina are world-class. Diving and snorkelling are excellent around the Aeolian and Pelagian islands, and the wine regions around Etna and Marsala are increasingly popular for tastings and tours.
