Getting Around

On foot. Viareggio is compact and flat — the main beach, promenade, and town centre are all within easy walking distance of each other and of the train station. Most visitors never need any other transport within the town.

By bike. A flat coastal cycle path runs south from Viareggio to Torre del Lago and continues around Lake Massaciuccoli. Bike rental is widely available near the seafront. This is the most pleasant way to reach Villa Puccini and the lake.

By bus. Local buses (Vaibus) connect Viareggio to neighbouring towns along the Versilia coast, including Forte dei Marmi and Pietrasanta. Useful if you want to day-trip without a car.

By car. A car is not necessary within Viareggio itself, but useful for reaching the marble quarries at Carrara (40 min north) or for exploring the Apuan Alps. Parking near the beach is paid and fills fast in summer; the large car parks further from the seafront are cheaper.

By train. The regional rail network is excellent for reaching Lucca (20 min), Pisa (20 min), and Florence (1 hr). If you're using Viareggio as a base for exploring Tuscany, a train pass or a stack of single tickets works out cheaper than renting a car.
