Gran Caffè Margherita

The Gran Caffè Margherita is Viareggio's most iconic building — a Liberty-style wooden pavilion built in 1929 by the architect Galileo Chini, standing at the northern end of the seafront promenade. Its painted wooden facade, Moorish-inflected arches, and ornate turrets make it look more like a film set than a café, which is part of the point. Chini was the leading decorative artist of Italian Modernism, and the café is his most visible public work. It functions as a working café and restaurant, so you can sit inside and appreciate the interior tilework and frescoed ceilings over a coffee. Listed as a protected monument of national cultural heritage.
