Viareggio Beach

The main beach stretches for 3 km along the Passeggiata Margherita, divided almost entirely into numbered private beach establishments (stabilimenti). Each one rents rows of sun beds and coloured umbrellas by the day; facilities typically include showers, changing cabins, and a beach bar. The water is shallow, sandy-bottomed, and calm — ideal for families. The free public beach (spiaggia libera) at the northern end near the Pineta di Levante is smaller but perfectly adequate, and gets busy with locals and budget-conscious visitors. Views from the beach on a clear day take in the snow-capped Apuan Alps rising behind the town.
