Palazzo del Bargello

14th-century police palace overlooking the Fontana dei Matti

A small Gothic civic palace on Via dei Consoli, built in the 14th century to house the bargello — the chief of the medieval police force — and his men. The crenellated facade is a perfect example of Gubbio civic Gothic in miniature, all the more pleasing because the building is on a steep narrow street rather than a grand piazza. The Fontana dei Matti sits in the little square in front.
