May is Gubbio's best month, both for weather and for spectacle: the Corsa dei Ceri runs on 15 May and the surrounding days fill the town with bands, races, and dinners. Book accommodation months ahead. September and October are quieter, the colours on Monte Ingino turn copper, and white truffle season starts at the end of October.
December brings the world's largest Christmas tree lit up the mountain, which is genuinely worth a trip. July and August are the slowest months — Italians head for the coast and Gubbio can feel sleepy, though the heat is more bearable than in nearby cities thanks to the elevation. Winter outside Christmas is cold, occasionally snowy, and very atmospheric in the empty stone streets.
