Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo

The Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo is one of Orvieto's great medieval civic buildings, with a crenellated stone front and a broad loggia that still gives the square a stern, public feel. It was built for the Captain of the People, the official who represented the commune during the city's independent years.

Today the palace is used for exhibitions and cultural events, so the interior depends on what is on. Even from outside, it is worth a stop while walking the old centre, especially as a counterpoint to the cathedral's more theatrical facade.
