Pozzo della Cava

The Pozzo della Cava is a privately run underground complex in the oldest district of Orvieto — a network of nine caves, cisterns, Etruscan cellars, and a large medieval well that were discovered when the owners began renovating their building. The complex spans multiple layers of history from Etruscan times to the Renaissance, and the excavations are ongoing.

Unlike the city-run underground tours, the Pozzo della Cava is more intimate and can be visited independently. The old well is particularly striking — a large circular shaft that once served the neighbourhood for centuries. The site includes ceramic fragments and other finds displayed in context. Entry is inexpensive.
