Aosta's café culture sits somewhere between Italian espresso tradition and French alpine habit, which makes sense for a bilingual city pressed against Mont Blanc. Piazza Chanoux is the social centre — the arcaded bars around its edges fill up for morning coffee and again in the early evening for aperitivo. The local alpine liqueur, Génépy (distilled from Artemisia plants that grow above 2,000 metres), is the drink to order once coffee hours are done.
In winter, the bar scene extends up the mountain: after-ski stops in Pila and the other resorts above the city follow their own rhythms. In summer, outdoor tables spill into the main squares and the pace slows considerably — this is a small city, and no one is in a hurry.
