The old centre of Aosta is compact and entirely walkable. The Roman monuments, the churches, and the main square are all within ten minutes on foot of each other. Via Sant'Anselmo, the main pedestrianised street that runs east from Porta Praetoria to Arco di Augusto, is the axis the town organises itself around.
Local buses run from the city out to the surrounding valley villages, and a cable car connects Aosta to the ski resort of Pila, with a station near the city centre. A car is useful for reaching the more remote valley destinations — the castles at Fénis, Issogne, and Verrès, and the trails up into the side valleys — but unnecessary for the city itself.
