When to Go

Aosta has two peak seasons with a quiet shoulder between them. Winter (December to March) brings skiers to Pila and the other resorts, and the city itself has a lively atmosphere — snow on the Roman ruins, aperitivo bars full of people in ski gear, and the Christmas market on Piazza Chanoux. Summer (June to September) is hiking and cycling season; the days are long, the mountain passes open, and the valley fills with Italian and French visitors. July and August are the busiest months.

Spring and autumn are quieter and often pleasant — the crowds thin, prices ease, and the light on the mountains can be extraordinary. The main cultural events include the Fiera di Sant'Orso, a centuries-old craft fair held on 30–31 January that fills the streets with woodcarvers, smiths, and leatherworkers from across the valley. Winter sport conditions depend on snowfall but the valley resorts typically open in December and run through April at altitude.
