Oratory of San Giorgio and Scoletta del Santo

Two small chapels by the basilica with frescoes by Altichiero and the young Titian

Two small buildings beside the Basilica di Sant'Antonio are almost always overlooked by visitors hurrying into the main basilica, and each is a small treasure.

The Oratory of San Giorgio, a fourteenth-century funerary chapel for the Lupi family, is covered with a fresco cycle by Altichiero da Zevio — one of the masters of the late Trecento, working in a style that is more naturalistic and dramatic than anything else in northern Italy of his moment.

Next door, the Scoletta del Santo is the headquarters of the lay confraternity of St Anthony, decorated by an unusually starry roster of painters including Titian in his early twenties (three frescoes of the miracles of the saint, painted around 1511) and Domenico Campagnola. Combined ticket with the basilica; allow half an hour for both.
