Vaduz Cathedral

Neo-Gothic cathedral and seat of the Archdiocese of Vaduz

The Cathedral of St Florin on Städtle was built in 1873 in a sober neo-Gothic style, replacing an older parish church. It became a cathedral only in 1997, when Pope John Paul II elevated Liechtenstein out of the Diocese of Chur and created the Archdiocese of Vaduz — making it one of the very few cathedrals in Europe whose status post-dates the building of the European Union.

Inside, the most interesting feature is the princely crypt, where members of the House of Liechtenstein have been buried since the 1880s. The cathedral is a quick five-minute stop in the middle of a Städtle walk; the interior is plain compared with the older churches in the surrounding Swiss Alps, but the building anchors the south end of the pedestrian zone.
