Kybynlar (Karaite Kitchen)

Traditional Karaite pastries from Lithuania's smallest ethnic minority

The Karaites are a Turkic ethnic group brought to Trakai by Grand Duke Vytautas in the 14th century as personal bodyguards. Their signature dish, kibinai (singular: kibinas), is a half-moon pastry filled with spiced lamb or mutton, the closest thing Lithuania has to a national snack food. Kybynlar on Stiklių Street is one of the few places in Vilnius to eat them well — most visitors encounter kibinai first in Trakai, the Karaite heartland 30 km away.

The pastries are baked fresh and served hot. The lamb filling is seasoned with black pepper and onion. The portion is generous, the price low. Beyond kibinai the menu includes Karaite soups and meat dishes that rarely appear elsewhere in Lithuanian restaurants. A meal here before or after visiting Trakai gives useful context. Stiklių St. 4. Open daily 10:00–21:00.
