Lokys (The Bear) has been operating in a Gothic cellar on Stiklių Street since 1972 — one of the few restaurants in Vilnius to predate independence. It specialises in traditional Lithuanian game: boar, venison, beaver, and elk, alongside the full range of potato and dairy dishes that form the backbone of Lithuanian cooking. The medieval cellar setting is authentic rather than contrived; the vaulted ceilings and stone walls were here long before the restaurant.
The menu is more interesting than standard tourist trap fare: the selection of prepared game dishes goes beyond what most restaurants offer, and the portions are substantial. Cepelinai (potato dumplings) here are properly made. It has long been popular with visiting dignitaries and foreign journalists, which keeps the kitchen honest. Stiklių St. 8/10.
