Cathedral Bell Tower

The freestanding bell tower of Vilnius Cathedral, originally part of the medieval city wall

The Cathedral Bell Tower stands separately from the cathedral itself on Cathedral Square and is one of the most recognisable structures in Vilnius. The lower sections are the oldest parts — a remnant of the medieval city wall and defensive tower that was gradually incorporated into the cathedral complex. The current upper portion was added in the 17th century, and the whole structure was rebuilt and remodelled several times.

The tower can be climbed and provides a different perspective on the square and old town from that offered by Gediminas Hill — lower, and more intimate with the city's street level. The interior has a small exhibition on the tower's history. The view of Cathedral Square from above is useful for understanding the urban layout of medieval Vilnius.
