Cathedral of the Theotokos

Russian Orthodox cathedral built in the 19th century, marking Vilnius's Orthodox community

The Cathedral of the Theotokos (Prechistenskiy Cathedral) on Maironio Street is the main Russian Orthodox church in Vilnius, built in the 19th century during Russian imperial rule. Its blue-and-white exterior and onion domes create a striking contrast with the predominantly Catholic Baroque architecture of the surrounding old town streets.

The interior is rich with Orthodox iconography and frescoes, and the gilded iconostasis dates from the 19th century. Vilnius historically had a large Russian and Byelorussian population alongside its Polish and Lithuanian communities, and this cathedral was the centre of their religious life. The church is still active; services draw a congregation from the city's remaining Orthodox community.
