Abandoned Yugoslav Fighter Jets

At the edge of Bitola's small airport, several F-86E Sabre jet fighters from the Yugoslav Air Force have sat rusting in the open for decades. These American-built aircraft were supplied to Yugoslavia under a military assistance programme in the 1950s and were eventually retired from service. Rather than being properly decommissioned or preserved, they were simply left where they stood.

The jets are now heavily graffitied and deteriorating, but they remain a striking and unexpected sight for anyone who stumbles on them. Access is informal — the aircraft are on the edge of the airfield perimeter and visible from the perimeter road. There is no formal public access, and you should not attempt to enter the airfield. The sight is best viewed from the road on the south side.
