Kičevo Monastery

Kičevo Monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God (Sveta Bogorodica Prečista), sits on a wooded hillside about four kilometres east of town on the road towards Makedonski Brod. It is one of the more venerated religious sites in western North Macedonia, drawing pilgrims on feast days and quiet visitors throughout the year.

The monastery complex includes a medieval church with a collection of well-preserved frescoes and icons. The setting — forested slopes, a small stream nearby, and relative isolation from the town bustle — makes it worth visiting even if you have no particular religious interest. The road up is paved and the monastery is accessible by car; a path from the lower road also allows a short walk through the trees.

A story
The monastery's church of St. Bogorodica Prečista — Our Lady of Purity — has been a pilgrimage site since medieval times. During the Ottoman period monks hid the monastery's treasures and manuscripts in the surrounding caves, and some of those icons are still venerated inside today.
