The Treska River cuts through a dramatic limestone gorge as it flows east from the Kičevo valley towards the Vardar. The canyon walls rise steeply above the water, and the road that follows the river offers some of the most striking scenery in the region. Downstream, the gorge opens near the Matka Canyon, which is accessible from Skopje and considered one of Macedonia's natural highlights.
The stretch closest to Kičevo is quieter and less visited than the Matka end. The river is cold and fast-moving in spring when snowmelt fills it; by late summer it calms enough for swimming in the wider pools. Local fishermen work the shallower stretches for brown trout. The combination of the gorge walls, the river, and the forested slopes above makes this a very rewarding drive or cycle from town.
