Kičevo (Кичево) is a small town of around 30,000 people in the mountainous west of North Macedonia, sitting at the confluence of the Treska River and Kičevska rivers at about 620 metres above sea level. Surrounded by the Bistra, Suva Gora, and Ilinska mountain ranges, it serves as the administrative centre of the Kičevo Municipality and a regional hub for the surrounding villages.
The town has a mixed Albanian and Macedonian population and a quietly distinctive character shaped by that coexistence. Its Ottoman-era past is visible in the old čaršija (bazaar district), and the hills above town are dotted with rural monasteries worth a half-day excursion. The nearest significant monastery, Sveta Bogorodica at Prečista, lies just a few kilometres away and is considered one of the more important religious sites in western Macedonia.
Kičevo is not a major tourist destination, but it is a convenient base for hiking in the Mavrovo and Bistra massifs, and the surrounding landscapes — beech forests, river gorges, and high meadows — reward travellers willing to leave the main roads.
