Church of St John at Kaneo

The Church of St John the Theologian at Kaneo is Ohrid's most photographed building, perched on a cliff above the lake at the western end of the old town. The cross-in-square plan, cushion-capital columns, and brick-and-tufa walls follow late Byzantine convention, but the lantern dome over the crossing is more elegantly proportioned than most contemporary churches in the Balkans.

Inside, fragments of the original frescoes survive on the dome and apse. The walk down from the old town through the village of Kaneo takes about fifteen minutes; the return uphill is longer in the heat. There is a small entrance fee and the church is busy in summer, especially at sunset.

A story
The church's date is uncertain — no inscription survives, and stylistic analysis puts it somewhere in the late 13th century, after the brief Byzantine reconquest of the area and before the Ottomans arrived. Its perched cliff position is not just dramatic but practical: the rocky promontory below shielded the building from the wave-driven erosion that has destroyed almost everything else built at lake level.
