National Workshop for Handmade Paper

In a small lakeside workshop in the old town, a working reproduction of Gutenberg's wooden press is used to make handmade paper from cotton and linen rags. The workshop produces sheets watermarked with the Ohrid coat of arms and printed certificates that are sold to visitors. It is one of only two functioning Gutenberg-style press reproductions in the world.

Demonstrations are given through the day in season; ten minutes is usually enough to see the pulping, sheet-laying, and pressing stages. A small shop sells the finished paper and the printed leaves. Quiet, unhurried, and a useful break from the steep walking the rest of Ohrid demands.
