The handful of restaurants clustered around the main square and along the streets leading to Park na Mladite serve the full range of Macedonian staples: tavče gravče (beans baked in a clay pot, the national comfort food), ajvar (the roasted pepper relish that appears on every table), and various grilled meats — kebapčinja, mešano meso, and the pleskavica burger that every Macedonian town does slightly differently. Portions are generous and prices are low — a full meal with a beer costs well under five euros.
The better places have outdoor terraces that stay busy from late morning until midnight in summer. Look for restaurants displaying the blue-and-yellow Macedonian flag motifs or the hand-written menus in Cyrillic that indicate a local following rather than a tourist one. The town's Turkish minority has also left a mark on the food culture, and you can find börek (savoury pastry) and baklava at the bakeries near the market.
