North Macedonia has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The best times to visit depend on what you're after.
Spring (April–June) is excellent for exploring the countryside, hiking in Mavrovo or Pelister national parks, and wandering cities without the summer heat. Temperatures are pleasant, wildflowers are out, and prices are lower.
Summer (July–August) is high season at Ohrid, when the lake town fills up and prices rise. The water is warm, festivals are on, and the atmosphere is lively. Skopje can be brutally hot in August — 35°C or above is common. The Galičnik Wedding Festival takes place in July.
Early Autumn (September–October) may be the sweet spot. Temperatures drop to something manageable, Lake Ohrid is still swimmable in early September, summer crowds thin out, and prices fall. The wine harvest is also in full swing.
Winter (November–March) is cold and often grey in the lowlands, but the ski resort at Popova Shapka above Tetovo and Mavrovo ski centre attract winter sports visitors. Snow can close some mountain roads.
Overall, April–June and September are the most comfortable months for general travel.
