Bars and Cafes

Gozo's nightlife is low-key. The liveliest spots are the cluster of bars and restaurants along the Marsalforn and Xlendi promenades, where tables spill onto the seafront and the evening passes slowly over cold local wine and grilled fish. In Victoria, a clutch of small bars around It-Tokk and Pjazza San Ġorġ stay open late.

For an aperitif, look for a pastizzeria — many double as wine bars in the evening — and try a glass of local Gellewża red or a dry Girgentina white from the small Gozitan vineyards. The local Cisk lager is everywhere; for something stronger, ask for a glass of bajtra, a sweet liqueur made from prickly pear, which most bars keep behind the counter.
