Dwejra is Gozo's most dramatic stretch of coast. The Inland Sea is a small lagoon connected to the open Mediterranean by an eighty-metre tunnel through the cliffs — boatmen run short trips through the tunnel and along the outer cliffs for a few euros. The lagoon itself is shallow and good for snorkelling.
Nearby, the broken pillar of Fungus Rock rises straight out of the bay (the Knights of St John once guarded the rock under sentence of death because they believed the lichen growing on it was medicinally valuable), and the remains of the collapsed Azure Window lie just offshore. The whole site is a designated nature reserve. Come at sunset for the best light, when the cliffs glow orange and the sea turns deep blue.
