Mġarr ix-Xini

Address Mġarr ix-Xini, Sannat, Gozo

Mġarr ix-Xini is a narrow cleft on the south coast of Gozo — a long, steep-sided valley dropping to a tiny pebble beach and a small stone watchtower built by the Knights of St John in 1661 to guard against pirates. The water in the cove is some of the clearest on the island; it's a favourite of snorkellers and free-divers.

The valley appeared in the 2015 Angelina Jolie film By the Sea, with the only restaurant on the bay — a small family-run kannolata serving grilled fish on a wooden terrace overlooking the cove — playing a recurring role. The road in is narrow and steep; come early, especially in summer, to avoid the queue of cars trying to turn around at the bottom.
