The Basilica of Ta' Pinu stands alone in open farmland near the village of Gharb and is the foremost pilgrimage church of the Maltese Islands. Its origins lie in a reported apparition of the Virgin Mary heard by a local woman in 1883. The current neo-Romanesque church was built in the 1920s and completed in 1931. The side aisles are lined with ex-votos — testimonies and offerings from devotees who believed their prayers were answered here.
