The walled citadel rising above Victoria, Gozo's capital, has been fortified since antiquity and served as a refuge for the island's entire population during Arab raids. The current bastions were built by the Knights of St John in the 17th century. Inside the walls are a cathedral, a small museum, and restored houses. The views from the ramparts across Gozo's patchwork of fields and villages to the sea are among the best on the island.
