Xewkija Rotunda

Address Triq Beland, Xewkija, Gozo

The Rotunda of Xewkija — formally the Church of St John the Baptist — is impossible to miss from anywhere on Gozo. Its enormous dome, modelled loosely on Santa Maria della Salute in Venice but bigger, dominates the island's skyline and is taller than St Paul's in London. The church was built between 1951 and 1971, almost entirely by volunteer parishioners using local limestone from the nearby quarry.

Inside, the dome is so wide that it makes the rest of the church feel small. Take the lift up to the gallery for one of the best panoramic views on Gozo — almost the entire island spreads out below you. The old church it replaced was preserved as a side chapel and museum.
