Capitoline Wolf Monument

A bronze copy of the Capitoline Wolf — the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus — stands on a stone column at the southwest corner of the Stephen the Great Park. The replica was gifted to Chisinau by the city of Rome in 1926 to mark the kinship between Romania and the ancient Roman colonisers of Dacia, a piece of cultural diplomacy that became politically loaded under the Soviet period and again after independence.

The wolf was removed by Soviet authorities in 1940, replaced with a Komsomol monument, returned in 1990, displaced again in 2009 to make room for road works, and reinstated for good in 2018. A small plaque tells the story. A five-minute stop on a walk through the central park.
