The freshwater marsh behind Buljarica beach is one of the last surviving coastal wetlands in Montenegro. Frogs, reed warblers, and the occasional little bittern live in the reed beds. In spring and autumn migrating waders use it as a stopover. Several rare orchids appear in the meadow at the back of the marsh in April and May.
The area has been protected on paper for years but is still under pressure from coastal development. A rough path runs along the inland side; quiet shoes and early morning give the best chances of seeing anything. Mosquito repellent in summer is non-optional.
