Igalo Beach and Mud Baths

Long pebble beach with a sulphur-and-mud spa famous in the Yugoslav era

Igalo sits at the western edge of Herceg Novi, a 30-minute walk along the promenade or a short bus ride. The beach is long and pebbly, much wider than anything in the old town, and the shallow water makes it the local family choice.

The Igalo Institute behind the beach is the curiosity. Founded on naturally occurring sulphurous mud and mineral springs, it became one of the most famous spa hospitals in Yugoslavia — Tito had a residence here and went for treatment regularly. It still functions as a clinic; day visitors can book mud baths or massages at the reception.
