Sahat Kula

Ottoman clock tower at the entrance to the old town

The Sahat Kula is the gateway to the old town from the upper road, a square Ottoman clock tower built in 1667 on orders of Sultan Mahmud I. The clock itself has been replaced several times — the current movement is Austrian, installed when the empire took over in 1797.

The tower stands at the edge of Belavista Square, the small terraced piazza where most of the old-town life happens: a few cafés under plane trees, a chess set with knee-high pieces, locals reading newspapers. It's a good place to sit for half an hour and watch the town wake up.
