Almere-Stad is the central district and the only part of the city with anything resembling a downtown. It is built around the OMA-masterplanned Stadshart, the Weerwater lake and the main railway station. This is where the architecture worth seeing is concentrated — the Kunstlinie, De Citadel, the new library, the Stadhuis — along with the city's main shopping street, cinemas, theatres and the largest concentration of cafés and bars.
It is dense by Dutch new-town standards but still mostly low-rise; the few tall buildings (the Carlton, the World Trade Center, the Stadhuistoren) stand out hard against an otherwise flat horizon. Most visitors will spend the bulk of their time here.
