The Pampushout is the broad belt of mixed woodland that wraps the western flank of Almere, between Almere-Stad and Almere-Poort. It was planted from scratch on the new polder soil in the 1970s and 80s — mostly poplar, willow and birch, with some oak and pine — and is now a full-grown forest crossed by an excellent network of cycle paths, bridle ways and footpaths.
It is the everyday weekend lung of the city: mountain bikers, dog walkers, families with strollers. There are barbecue clearings, a small pancake farm at the edge, and views across the Gooimeer towards Muiderberg. Easiest entry is from Almere-Poort station or the Pampushout-Zuid car park.
