Claes Claeszhofje

The entry is easy to miss — an unmarked door to the right of a restaurant at Eerste Egelantiersdwarsstraat, always unlocked. Through it, a passage opens into a network of three interconnected courtyards, the oldest part dating to 1616 when cloth merchant Claes Claesz. Anslo left this land to house elderly people free of charge. The complex sat abandoned for twenty years before Stichting Diogenes restored it in the 1960s. Today it houses artists and students, the mix of scales and angles the result of three separate hofjes merged into one.
