Amsterdam is compact enough to walk most of it, and biking is the obvious alternative — there are roughly 800,000 bikes in the city and hiring one costs around €10–15 per day. The tram network covers the centre well, running every 5–10 minutes on most routes; a single journey OV-chipkaart or a 24/48/72-hour day pass from the GVB are the easiest options. Taxis are expensive and slow in traffic — avoid them. A train from Central Station reaches Schiphol Airport in about 20 minutes for around €5; taxis cost 10 times that.
