De Papegaai

Former hidden Catholic church tucked behind a narrow facade on busy Kalverstraat.

De Papegaai, formally the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, is easy to miss on Kalverstraat. That is exactly the point. The church began as a Catholic shelter church in the years when public Catholic worship was restricted in the Dutch Republic, hidden behind the ordinary street life of Amsterdam's busiest shopping drag.

The present narrow Neo-Gothic facade gives only a hint of the space inside, where a quiet nave sits in sharp contrast to the crowds outside. It is smaller and less famous than Our Lord in the Attic, but it tells a similar Amsterdam story: religion surviving behind doors, in courtyards, and in buildings that learned not to announce themselves too loudly.
