Moeders

A Jordaan institution whose walls are covered floor to ceiling in framed photographs of mothers — brought in over the years by customers who responded to an opening-week request. The food is old-fashioned Dutch: stamppot, hutspot, boiled beef, pea soup, and other dishes that take seriously the idea of cooking the way Dutch grandmothers did.

Not a place for food trends. Moeders is for people who want a proper Dutch meal in surroundings that feel genuinely local rather than arranged for tourists. The portions are large, the prices honest, and the atmosphere — aided by the photographs — is unlike anywhere else in the city.
