Homomonument

Three large pink granite triangles set into the ground at the Westermarkt, next to the Westerkerk. Together they form a larger triangle — designed by Karin Daan and unveiled in 1987 as the world's first memorial to gay men and lesbians persecuted for their sexuality. One corner points toward the Anne Frank House, one toward the National War Memorial on Dam Square, and one toward the COC, the oldest gay rights organisation in the world, founded in Amsterdam in 1946. Each triangle carries a different meaning: past persecution, present struggle, and hope for the future.

The monument is easily missed if you don't know to look for it — it is flush with the ground and blends into the square. It serves as a gathering point during Pride and on Remembrance Day (4 May). Flowers are often laid at the corner nearest the Westerkerk.

A story
Unveiled in 1987, it was the first monument in the world to commemorate gay men and lesbians who were persecuted for their sexuality. The pink triangle, originally forced on gay prisoners in Nazi concentration camps, was reclaimed as a symbol of pride and remembrance.
