One of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, founded in 1638 to grow medicinal herbs for Amsterdam's doctors. The greenhouses are spectacular — a three-climate dome holds plants from tropical to desert environments. The orangerie makes a good lunch stop, and the garden is calm enough to feel like a genuine escape from the city.
